Will Smyth – The driving force behind Prospect Print
Hi, Will Smyth here! This is my journey so far… In 2004, it all began, almost 20 years ago when my dad took me on after finishing school. I was lucky to have the opportunity to learn first-hand finishing, printing, scanning and running posters on the inkjet. After working at Linford Forum for a year, we then decided to move to Crownhill and purchase a brand-new HP Indigo Printing press. This also gave me the opportunity to travel to Maastricht in Holland to train and gain qualifications in operating the machine.
In 2016, other printing technology was catching up, so we looked for the opportunity to offer longer sheet sizes, white ink, envelope printing and much more. This meant a trip to Heidelberg in Brentford to check out the new Versafire machines. We were really impressed to see the number of stocks that these machines could run on and that black ink could dry so quickly! When Covid struck in 2020, and with so little information at the time, we could see no way of keeping the business going through the pandemic. We made the painful yet logical decision to cease trading as Laser Graphics….after a massive 32 years of trading!
As the months went on and given that we had such a loyal customer base, I made the decision to give it another go alongside Lasers former employee Matt, and, Prospect Print was born! Matt has since played a key part in growing Prospect Print and his loyalty during the Covid years has been invaluable.
That brings us to today. I am thankful to say that more and more work is returning and we have been able to acquire new machinery such as a new digital die-cutting machine, encapsulating machine, as well as the tools to bring in-house traditional foiling, embossing and debossing.
We’re all extremely excited to see what the future holds and aim to keep growing as an established print support to our customers; old and new.
From work to play
I enjoy travelling with my wife, boxsets, walks with the dog, football, boxing and of course all things print!
Matt Clarke - Journey through Print
I’ve been in the print production industry for 7-8 years. I fell into the industry by complete accident! I was 17 and looking for an apprenticeship because I didn’t want to go back into education. My grandad who had been in print for 30+ years was good friends with Bill Smyth, managing director of Laser Graphics. My grandad got me an interview for the job and the rest is history.
I was trained on every piece of machinery in the company. I learned every process and technique it offered and have become very experienced over the years. I worked closely with Will over my time at Laser Graphics and built a solid friendship with him. Back in March 2020, the worst happened and we had to shut Laser Graphics down. That was a hard time for the team as we were like a family. It was in the summer of 2020 when Will reached out to me and told me about Prospect Print. He wanted me to come back and work with him. He knew I could help him run the production line as I had knowledge of the equipment.
In October 2020, we moved into our Bletchley premises and Prospect Print had a home! Over the past 3 years, I have helped Will grow Prospect, as well as befriending our clients and customers. I’ve picked up new skills to this day, training on new machines and processes, visiting places near and far, gaining and expanding knowledge such as traditional foiling and the latest edition to Prospect Print; debossing and embossing. I look forward to experimenting with future possibilities in the print industry.
